Autumn is the season of the year between summer and winter during which temperatures gradually decrease. It usually starts around September 22 or 23 here in Virginia and lasts until December 21 or 22nd. At this time of year, the days get shorter as the nights get longer, giving people less daylight.

I often call it fall because leaves fall from their branches. The falling of the leaves begins when the leaves change colors and go from green, to reds, yellows and oranges. As autumn continues, the leaves begin to drop from the trees and bushes signifying the end of the harvest time.

Autumn is often connected with the harvesting of crops. It is marked by festivals and celebrations often associated with the harvesting of these crops before winter. Some holidays during this time period are Halloween in October and Thanksgiving in November. Other holidays include the Jewish Sukkot and the Chinese Moon Festival.

What a wonderful time of year this is. It is my favorite season.
